Gates also unearthed the first novel written by a black American, Harriet Wilson's Our Nig, and the first written by a female slave, Hannah Crafts' the Bondwoman's Narrative. Or, Sketches From the Life of a Free Black in a Two-story White House, North by Harriet E. Wright who began as a Man Thinking. In 2002 he was one of a number of experts asked by scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. When reading The Bondwoman's Narrative, a certain passage stuck out to me as being as very anti- American Scholar.
